November, 2021 President’s Update #16 – by Henry Christoff

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I feel that we have a lot to be thankful for as 2021 comes to a close as it appears we are rounding the corner with regard to the Covid 19 pandemic.

I have received several emails over the past weeks asking about Mike (Roundel Tech Talk guru) Miller’s recovery progress. If you saw his Tech Talk column in the October Roundel, you read that his recovery is a slow process, but there is progress. If you would like to personally or anonymously help Mike, the Go Fund Me page for Mike is still accepting donations. All funds to go directly to his bank account; a close friend of Mike’s has agreed to monitor the account, set aside funds for tax obligations, and disburse the rest appropriately—tasks which are unfortunately beyond Mike’s abilities at this time.

Several members contacted me to say they preferred receiving the monthly President’s Update by email rather than look for it on the E31 Chapter website. I will continue the practice of sending the monthly updates directly to Chapter members via email and the Updates will continue to be posted to our website, so you’ll always find them there. Thank you for your comments, which are always welcome.

Recently, I had the misfortune to have the glove box lock mechanism break on my ’91 850i. Although the lower glove box would still open, the upper glove box door would not. Living in Canada, my local BMW dealer quoted 5-6 weeks delivery from Germany for a new mechanism and wanted a sizable dollar amount from my check book. Normally, I would order the part from a U.S. BMW parts source and pickup the part at my address in Washington State. However, due to the pandemic, crossing the border into the U.S. then immediately back into Canada is not an option presently and shipping to Canada by a U.S. BMW dealer is a no-no. I ended up buying the new replacement part from Schmiedmann in Europe. The part arrived within a week and I saved about $40.00 compared to a local BMW dealer.

The screwdriver is pointing to the pop metal piece that failed.
